What IS the Mechanism of Application Superabsorbent Polymers (SAP)?
Usually, the SAP polymer has a molecular backbone with Sodium or Potassium, when added to water, the neutralization start immediately across the diffusion gradient, the water molecules are drawn into the polymer network and locked within the polymer structure which is built by the SAP molecular chains (hydrogen bondings).
How SAP Expands to a Bigger Particular After Absorbing Water?
As the water is locked within the polymer structure, there is a force to straighten the SAP molecular chains, however, the molecular chains are cross-linked together, in the end, all forces reach a balance, the structure is still there while the particular size expands as the water absorbed in.
