Pam Polyacrylamide Accelerated Wastewater Sludge Flocculation and Sedimentation

Sewage contains a large amount of suspended matter. Whether it is for the purpose of water purification or considering the cost of water reuse, it is generally necessary to clarify the water. The suspended matter in the water needs to settle before it can be used. In professional terms, it is settled and removed under the action of gravity. This is a physical process. Depending on the type of sewage and the degree of pollution, sometimes it may encounter sewage that is difficult to settle naturally, and sometimes it remains motionless for several days. At this time, it is necessary to add pam polyacrylamide or polyaluminum chloride and other coagulants to help settle it.

As for the settling velocity, it needs to be calculated based on the properties and concentration of suspended matter, as well as the settling method used. Settling can be divided into: natural settling, coagulation settling. Natural settling, also known as free settling, occurs when the concentration of suspended solids in water is not high and no auxiliary agents are added. During the settling process, suspended solids do not interfere with each other and each particle settles individually in a straight line. At present, both methods are generally used in industrial wastewater treatment. For example, in the primary treatment process of urban sewage treatment, in order to achieve faster settling velocity, it is necessary to add anionic polyacrylamide, which can also obtain more ideal flocs.


Coagulation settling is the process of particles in water coagulating and settling. After adding coagulants to the water, due to the good adsorption structure of the coagulants, they will quickly react with the suspended matter in the water, forming flocs. Among them, the colloids and dispersed particles of suspended matter form flocs under the molecular forces and coalesce and collide during the settling process, increasing in size and velocity. The removal efficiency of suspended matter depends not only on the settling velocity but also on the settling depth. The coagulation and settling phenomenon will occur in alum floc formed after adding coagulant to ground water, organic suspended matter in domestic sewage, and activated sludge during settling. Therefore, if a faster settling velocity is required, some chemical agents need to be added, and if natural settling can meet the production and operation needs, there is no need to add them, which can save some expenses.


Most high molecular weight polymers have a certain viscosity, especially for some water-soluble polymers, and viscosity is very important. For example, pam polyacrylamide, the size of its viscosity can be measured and calculated to obtain the corresponding relative molecular weight. The viscosity and concentration of PAM aqueous solution after dissolution are approximately logarithmic, that is, a linear relationship.

Polymer products with high molecular weight and ultra-high molecular weight (generally higher than 20 million) have high viscosity. Their water solutions have good tolerance to electrolytes, and the molecular chains are long, which allows them to bridge between two particles and accelerate particle settling. They are very important coagulant products in the water industry.


The raw material for producing it, acrylamide, is a toxic substance and has side effects on the nervous system of mammals. However, the dry pam series products obtained through polymerization can be said to be low-toxic or non-toxic, and most products do not irritate the skin, so direct contact with them is harmless to the human body. Products with high polymerization degree can also be used for drinking water treatment.
