
High-organic wastewater from municipal sewage plants, food and beverage processing, slaughterhouses, breweries and paper mills is among the most difficult streams to treat. Its suspended solids are mainly organic colloids such as proteins, oils, cellulose and microbial biomass, which carry strong negative surface charges and remain stubbornly stable in water. Organic particles in wastewater are almost always negatively charged, so they repel each other and resist settling. Cationic polyacrylamide carries positively charged groups along its polymer chain, which directly neutralize the negative surface charge of organic colloids and destabilize them far more efficiently than anionic or nonionic polymers.
After neutralization, the long chains of cationic polyacrylamide adsorb onto many particles at once and bridge them into large, compact flocs. These flocs settle fast, float well in dissolved air flotation (DAF) units and release water easily, giving clearer supernatant and higher COD/BOD removal at a lower chemical dosage.

High-organic sludge is gelatinous and holds water tightly. Cationic flocculants condition the sludge so that bound water is released, forming shear-resistant flocs that stand up to belt presses, centrifuges and screw presses. Plants that switch to the right cationic grade typically see drier sludge cake, lower polymer consumption and reduced disposal cost, which makes sludge dewatering one of the strongest arguments for cationic chemistry.
Organic loading, pH and temperature in high-organic streams change constantly. Cationic flocculants are available in a wide range of charge densities and molecular weights, in both powder and emulsion forms, so a suitable grade can be matched to each stream and keeps performing even when influent quality varies.
High-charge cationic grades suit municipal wastewater treatment plants, digested sludge and high-organic industrial effluent; medium-charge grades fit mixed industrial wastewater and DAF units; emulsion forms dissolve quickly where powder preparation is limited. Jar testing is always recommended to identify the optimal product and dosage.
